FAQ

Q: Where can I find information about [a specific topic]?

A good place to start would be the internet, don’t you think? Most questions like that are either too vague or too specific for me to address here, but you should definitely try the techniques in “How to learn and find things on the internet.”

Q: Where did you get your logo?

Like all good logos, this one was developed over time with a wonderful designer Jennifer Cottreau, with many back and forth iterations. The central theme is of course, the propeller beanie, that long-time icon of geekdom, and the colours were chosen for their primary goodness, to convey simplicity and accessibility.

Other options included references to a bicycle or tricycle, with elements such as training wheels and handlebar streamers. These were removed in favour of the simple, straightforward design you see here, but one element remains - the background for the words ‘in training’ is the footplate of a tricycle.

Q: Why does the site look strange in older browsers?

This site starts with a relatively clean slate, designing to good web standards. There will be more information about web standards in a future article, but for now, it just means that there are standards on the web that were ignored or just implemented in a buggy way by past browsers.

One of the biggest (and it seems they don’t really learn, even with new versions) offenders is Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. While I’ve tried to make sure the content is reasonably presentable, GeeksInTraining.com does not believe in supporting a browser that doesn’t follow simple web standards, and won’t cater to old, unfixed bugs in IE 6 and lower. If we are to get the web to move forward, I encourage others to do the same.

If this is not what you think is happening, please let me know on the contact page.

Q: Your site is too simple for me. Will it ever have something more advanced?

Absolutely. I’m glad that you’re at a level that you can say that, and I hope you keep coming back as new articles go up. I can’t guarantee that this site will have something for everybody — that would be foolish and untrue.

I can say that the site is evolving, and in time, the content will be broader, and there will be more to choose from. In addition to the regular articles, there’s a section devoted to more advanced subjects called Geeking out.

Q: Your site is too advanced for me. Are you sure you’re for geeks in training?

That’s probably our fault more than yours. We’re starting off, and at this point, trying to get content up is the main concern. The articles will continue to come, and I’m hoping you’ll find something at your level, whatever it may be.

You’re here and interested, and that’s the main thing, so hang in there. Remember, there’s always the option of posting a comment or question if you get stuck or need specific help understanding a topic.
